50 years on: How nonprescription medicines became economic powerhouse

Share

Consumer Healthcare Products (CHP) Australia, the organisation representing the nonprescription medicines sector, has marked its 50th anniversary, celebrating its role in promoting responsible self-care and contributing significantly to the Australian economy.

The nonprescription medicines industry in Australia generates $8 billion in domestic sales and $2 billion in export revenue annually. This sector is crucial to the nation’s economy, with every dollar spent on common over-the-counter products saving the Australian economy four dollars in healthcare costs.

Deon Schoombie, CEO of CHP Australia, who will retire next month after 14 years of leadership, highlighted the organisation’s impact on public health and the economy. “For 50 years, CHP Australia has been at the forefront of advocating for the availability and safe use of nonprescription medicines,” Schoombie said.

“Our efforts have not only enabled Australians to take charge of their health through responsible self-care but have also contributed significantly to the Australian economy.”

Schoombie has been a key advocate for integrating self-care into the national health policy, emphasising the importance of health literacy and access to nonprescription medicines. Under his leadership, CHP Australia has expanded product availability, supported industry growth, and promoted the significance of self-medication in public health.

As CHP Australia celebrates its milestone anniversary, it remains committed to its mission of ensuring responsible access to nonprescription medicines. The organisation’s ongoing efforts focus on empowering Australians to make informed health choices, ultimately strengthening both individual health outcomes and the broader healthcare system.

The 50th-anniversary celebration brought together current and past members, along with partners in self-care, including various industry associations, healthcare organisations and academic institutions.
