Uber has launched two new features aimed at making transport more accessible for older Australians: Simple mode and the senior account. Both are designed to reduce digital barriers for users aged 65 and over, enabling them to book rides more easily and stay connected with loved ones.
With Australia’s population ageing rapidly—currently, 17% of Australians are over 65, projected to rise to over 10 million by 2066—transport access has become a key factor in supporting independence, health and social engagement among seniors.
According to Uber-commissioned data, 36% of Australians aged 65 and above say that not being able to arrange transport easily is a significant pain point in their day-to-day lives.
New features to improve digital access
The newly launched Simple mode simplifies the Uber app interface with larger text, fewer buttons and clearer instructions, making it easier for seniors to navigate independently. Meanwhile, the senior account, offered through Uber’s Family profile, allows a trusted family member to manage bookings, update payment methods and receive live trip updates—all from their own device.
“We listened closely to older Australians and their families, and one message came through clearly – technology should be helpful, not overwhelming,” said Emma Foley, Managing Director of Uber Australia & New Zealand.
“As our population ages, we’re committed to making transport more accessible for every rider – regardless of age, confidence, or comfort with technology. That’s why we’re introducing Simple mode and senior accounts – to simplify the Uber experience and make it easier for older adults to get where they need to go, when they want to.”
Supporting well-being through mobility
Government research shows that staying mobile and socially active is critical to older Australians’ wellbeing. Uber’s new tools aim to close the gap for those who may struggle with complex interfaces or limited access to transport.
Both features provide options for greater flexibility and safety. Seniors can save regular destinations, while family organisers can intervene as needed—booking rides, updating locations, or speaking directly with the driver on their behalf. Live trip tracking ensures that family members stay informed throughout the ride.
The new features build on Uber’s broader commitment to accessibility, joining initiatives such as booking via phone (13-UBER), teen accounts, and caregiver ride options.
How it works
To set up a senior account, a family organiser invites their older loved one to join their Family profile. The senior receives a text with a link to download the Uber app and set up their account. They can then book rides themselves using Simple mode or get help from family members when needed.
Simple mode can also be turned on independently in the Account section of the Uber app.
Both features are now rolling out nationally from 14 July.
