Silverchain has become the country’s first organisation to implement smart glasses technology at scale across its home care services, enabling real-time specialist consultations and improved patient outcomes regardless of location.
The wearable devices, which feature built-in cameras that stream live video via wireless connection, allow care workers visiting clients in their homes to instantly consult with remote specialists while keeping their hands free to provide care.
“The future of care is in the home, and Silverchain is at the forefront of care innovation,” said Silverchain’s Chief Executive, Dale Fisher AM. “Smart glasses enhance the care experience for our clients while improving access to essential health and aged care services.”
Following a successful pilot program, the technology has now been integrated across a range of Silverchain services including palliative care, hospital in the home, aged care, clinical support, medication management, and specialist wound care.
Silverchain’s Director of Health Innovation Kate Symons said, “A nurse visiting a client at home for a routine check can now instantly consult with multiple clinicians in real time, reducing the need for additional appointments and improving patient outcomes.”
The technology is particularly valuable for serving clients in remote and regional areas, according to Silverchain Occupational Therapist Alex Skinner.
“This technology vastly improves the efficiency and delivery of care in the home, especially for clients who aren’t near specialist providers,” Skinner explained. “With hands-free access to care plans and real-time specialist input, clinicians can make informed decisions without delay, ensuring all clients – regardless of location – receive the best possible care.”
Beyond improving individual care experiences, the smart glasses initiative is expected to reduce pressure on the broader healthcare system by minimising unplanned escalations and hospital visits. The technology enables immediate assessment of deteriorating patients and provides instant access to specialist advice for complex cases.
The rollout was supported by donations to the Silverchain Foundation as part of the organisation’s commitment to technology-enabled home care across Australia.
