New deal aims to make private care ‘more in tune with how people live’

Ramsay Health Care and Bupa have signed a new agreement that not only secures access to Ramsay’s 76 private hospitals for Bupa customers but also charts a broader future for private healthcare, one that increasingly reaches into patients’ homes and communities.

The deal deepens the longstanding partnership between the country’s largest private hospital operator and one of Australia’s biggest health insurers, with a key focus on extending care beyond hospital walls.

“This is about giving our customers more support and care options, whether they are in hospital or recovering at home,” said Bupa Health Insurance Managing Director Kate Williams. “We are working together to make private health care more accessible and more in tune with how people live today.”

Under the agreement, Ramsay and Bupa will pilot several out-of-hospital programs for eligible patients, including:

  • Care at home for conditions such as infections, wound care, chronic illness and palliative care.
  • A new rehabilitation program delivered in the home or virtually after surgery or illness.
  • Structured follow-up care in the community, including a new mental health initiative.

Ramsay Health Care Australia CEO Carmel Monaghan said the partnership was anchored in a mutual commitment to quality care and innovation.

“Our hospitals remain the foundation of our business and we’re proud of the high-quality care Ramsay provides every day,” she said. “But recovery doesn’t stop when a patient goes home. Through this partnership with Bupa, we’re offering more follow-up care at home, in the community and online, so people continue to get the support they need in a way that fits their lives.”

The companies say the agreement is part of a broader effort to modernise private health care, reducing reliance on hospital-based recovery and responding to changing patient expectations.

The expanded partnership also comes as insurers and providers face mounting pressure to improve value for money and deliver flexible, patient-centred services amid rising costs and increased demand for at-home and digital care options.
