Free nurse training program launched amid workforce crisis

A fully funded national training program is aiming to stem the looming shortage of aged care nurses across Australia by equipping early-career nurses with the skills and support they need to thrive in the sector.

The Aged Care Transition to Practice Program (ACTTP), launched by Ageing Australia in partnership with care providers nationwide, is targeting one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: recruiting and retaining a capable, long-term nursing workforce.

The initiative arrives as the aged care industry braces for a projected shortfall of more than 17,500 full-time nurses by 2035.

“At Ageing Australia, we’re dedicated to advancing aged care nursing expertise and supporting learners to thrive,” said Tom Symondson, CEO of Ageing Australia.

Funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, the ACTTP is available in every state and territory and is open to both registered and enrolled nurses entering or transitioning into aged care roles. It also invites aged and community care providers to take part.

The program offers a structured blend of live learning sessions, mentorship, and practical case studies. Its goal is to not only develop clinical skills but also prepare nurses for the evolving demands of the aged care environment, including compliance with new mandatory 24/7 registered nurse coverage in all aged care homes.

“Our ACTTP program combines structured learning, mentorship and industry partnerships to empower nurses and equip them with the confidence, skills and professionalism the sector needs,” Symondson said.

“With aged care nurses seeing historic changes – from wage increases to new models of care – the program offers vital support to help them succeed and stay in the sector,” he added.

The ACTTP is part of broader national efforts to strengthen aged care following widespread reforms, but stands out for its focus on on-the-ground workforce support.
