Aged care about ‘trust, not tasks,’ new research finds

New research into the priorities of older Australians has found they overwhelmingly value genuine human connection and trust over simple task completion in at-home aged care, with personality being more important than formal qualifications when choosing a support worker.

The findings, from a Hireup survey of more than 1,000 people aged 75-85, come as the federal government prepares to launch its major “Support at Home” reforms in November 2025. The survey revealed that while 98% of older Australians want to remain at home as they age, the quality of their support hinges on relationships.

“This research gives us a powerful reminder of what really matters in aged care,” said Laura O’Reilly, CEO of Hireup. “Older Australians are telling us that trust, humour and shared values are at the heart of meaningful support relationships. It shows that quality support is about genuine human connection, not just ticking off tasks.

The survey found that trust and safety (79%) and affordability (73%) were the most important factors for people in aged care. It also showed 88% of older Australians want a support worker who shares their values, with two in three saying a genuine connection boosts their satisfaction.

This focus on relational support was highlighted by Antonio, whose wife Victoria lives with dementia. He described finding the right support worker as “life-changing.

“With dementia, the familiar things at home make all the difference for my wife – her chair, her garden, her routines,” Antonio said. “Her Hireup support worker speaks Spanish, so we can all chat and laugh together. Having the right support means she can stay where she’s happiest, and I get to just be her husband again.

The findings suggest that as the aged care sector shifts towards a more user-directed model, its success will depend on fostering these meaningful human connections.
